Speed Safety Campaign Held in Skye & Lochalsh

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Monday September 10 2018

Police in Skye & Lochalsh have issued a warning about the dangers of speeding after a week-long safety campaign.

Thirteen drivers have been charged in relation to speeding by local officers, working with colleagues from the Road Policing Unit, during the campaign which ended on Sunday, September 9.

These included a man, 55, charged after a vehicle was detected at a 70mph in a 40mph zone at Balmacara and a 45-year-old man charged in connection with a detection of 55mph in a 30mph in Broadford.

Both of these drivers have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal - the remainder have been issued with fixed penalty notices.

A further 10 drivers were issued with warnings regarding speed, vehicle defects or careless driving, including one driver for a close pass of a cyclist in the Sleat area of Skye and a vehicle seized in the Broadford area due to being uninsured.

Commenting Sergeant Bruce Crawford said:

"Road safety is the main issue raised with police in Skye & Lochalsh and such enforcement activity is going to continue.

"In addition to this we are working with partners to ensure specific stretches of road are made as safe as possible.

"We are also keen to work with our communities and would encourage local groups to contact us to report concerns about speeding or for advice in relation to what residents can do to help local officers."

Anyone with concerns can call Police Scotland on 101 or 999 in an emergency situation. You can also share information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
