MSP’s Fresh Hope That Dornie Toilets Will Remain Open
Highland Council are “confident” that it can reach an agreement to keep the under-threat toilets at Dornie Hall open, the local authority has told the constituency MSP.
Kate Forbes MSP (Pictured) had raised the potential closure of the toilets with the council on behalf of many local constituents, after the local authority decided to end a funding agreement with the Dornie and District Community Hall Association for use of the facilities.
It is understood that a lack of funding could lead to the closure of the toilets, which have disabled access and are coach-friendly.
Dornie Hall is a short distance from Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic tourist attractions, and a petition to the council has gathered more than 4,500 signatories thus far.
Kate Forbes MSP said:
“I had written to Highland Council because of the concerns raised locally.
“The toilets are clearly well used, particularly at the height of the tourism season.
“Highland Council have obviously been listening and thanks to the efforts of local councillors and local people, I am hopeful that the toilets will remain open.
“The toilets at Dornie Hall are widely used by both locals and tourists and are a popular well know convenience stop.
“I understand that these toilets are also the only disabled toilets within the local area and due to the layout of the car park many touring coaches use these facilities on a regular basis.
“If these toilets close, then there will be no provision locally.
“This could result in an increase in outside toileting which will only have a negative effect on the local environment, particularly when we consider the outlook to ever-popular Eilean Donan Castle.
“I remain hopeful that Highland Council can reach an amicable solution with the Dornie and District Community Hall Association to fund these much-needed toilet facilities in a remote location.”
