Time for Shambolic Mundell to Go
Scottish Secretary (pictured) fails to answer basic questions in car crash interview.
The SNP has renewed calls for David Mundell to step down as Secretary of State for Scotland after a “shambolic” radio interview this morning in which he utterly failed to answer basic questions on the Tory government’s brazen power grab.
Just 15 minutes were allocated for debate at Westminster on issues related to devolution during the EU Withdrawal Bill debate last night – and no Scottish MPs were given the opportunity to speak as the entire time was taken up by Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington.
During the car-crash interview, David Mundell was repeatedly asked why there was next to no time given for debate of issues related to devolution – making the bizarre and telling claim that “even if we'd had 100 hours of debate, the situation wouldn't have changed," proving the UK government’s contempt for Scottish devolution and desire to rollback the powers of the devolved parliament.
The Tory power-grab was approved by Parliament following the 15-minute debate, ignoring the voice of Scotland’s parliament which withheld consent – with SNP MPs the only Scottish representatives to vote against it.
Commenting, Ash Denham MSP, who sits on Holyrood’s Constitution Committee, said:
“The last 24 hours have made it perfectly clear – it’s time for David Mundell to go.
“His shambolic interview this morning showed just how out of touch he is with the interests of Scotland.
“His job description explicitly states that he is supposed to protect the devolution settlement, yet he has done all he can to undermine it.
“He was given chance after chance to explain why Scottish MPs were shut out from debating the Tories’ power grab, yet he failed to answer – but crucially said that the UK government was never going to budge anyway.
“This toxic Tory government is intent on destroying jobs and living standards across Scotland – and taking powers away from our Parliament while they are at it.
“Scotland’s voice was absolutely clear on this Tory power grab, yet the UK government have pushed ahead anyway.
“Only the SNP can be trusted to stand up for Scotland’s interests when it really matters.”
