STUC and SCVO Speak Out on Unprecedented Westminster Power Grab

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Wednesday June 13 2018

The Tories total disregard for the people of Scotland is completely unacceptable.

Stephen Gethins MP has welcomed comments from the Scottish Trade Union Congress and the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) as Westminster debates the Lords Amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill.

The comments from the STUC describe the Tory tactic of forcing through the power grab – taking devolved powers back to Westminster as – ‘extremely grave and unprecedented’ – with the SCVO calling for more not less power to be devolved to Holyrood.

Stephen Gethins MP commented:

‘’It is no surprise that organisations like the STUC and the SCVO have made these comments - and they are absolutely right.

“It is a democratic outrage that Westminster has treated the Scottish Parliament with such contempt.

‘’The Scottish Parliament has been completely ignored by the minority Tory Government as it seeks to railroad this legislation through without any consideration of the views of the people of Scotland who voted decisively to remain in the EU.

‘’The Tories have disregarded any solutions from the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament to avoid a damaging hard Brexit.

‘’It is simply not good enough that despite countless representations from the Scottish Government seeking to work with the UK Government – they have been ignored.

‘’The Tories really do think they can do anything to Scotland and get away with it – their track record of disdain is shocking and completely unacceptable.’’
