Wake Up Call on Tory Power Grab
New survey shows support for immigration powers coming to Scotland.
SNP Westminster Deputy Leader Kirsty Blackman MP (pictured) has welcomed the findings of a survey that shows majorities for more powers to be decided in Scotland as a ‘wake-up call for the Tories and not altogether surprising’ given the threat of the Tory power grab and their chaotic Brexit.
The survey for YouGov and the BBC finds majority support for numbers of immigrant workers to be decided in Scotland rather than at Westminster.
The survey also asked about a number of other powers – including the siting of nuclear weapons – the level of unemployment benefits and business taxes and where Scots would rather see them decided.
There were consistent majorities for issues to be decided Scotland.
The findings come as the Tories continue with their Brexit power grab from Holyrood – threatening the devolution settlement and potentially doing enormous damage to Scotland’s economy and future growth.
Kirsty Blackman MP said:
‘’This is a wake-up call for all those Tories from David Mundell down – who want to reduce not increase Scotland’s powers.
‘’A decisive majority support the Scottish parliament having the power to decide on foreign workers rights to come and work in Scotland – recognising the Tories’ failed hostile environment policy runs counter to the needs of the Scottish economy.
“There is also a clear majority for levels of business taxes to be set in Scotland – against the backdrop of Westminster indifference to Scotland’s economic needs.
‘’It is not altogether surprising given the UK government’s unending Brexit mess, and the consistent failure by the Tories to act in Scotland’s interests.
“The Tories still think they can do anything to Scotland and get away with it.
‘’These findings indicate that there is growing confidence in Scotland’s future and consistent and solid support for decisions currently made by Westminster – to be devolved.
“We know that Scotland can have a brighter future if we continue to drive forward progressive policies in health, education and the economy, as well as challenging the Tories chaotic job destroying Brexit.
“While Labour and the Tories are blinkered by negativity and the chaos of Brexit - the SNP is focused on hope and ambition for Scotland.''
