Fury as Moray Tory Convener Refuses SNP Administration Motion
SNP Councillors have expressed their fury and frustration as Moray Council’s Tory Convener has refused a motion to debate the formation of a new administration despite demands from his own party and others that the SNP take it on.
Seven of the eight Tory councillors walked out of the Administration of the Council last week leaving just one Conservative and five Independent councillors in Administration out of a total of 26 councillors.
SNP Councillors had stated today that partnership talks had reached a standstill and they were now putting forward a motion to tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) council meeting that would change the Administration to a minority SNP Administration.
Commenting on the refusal to accept the motion SNP Co-Leader Shona Morrison said:
“The situation in Moray Council is completely outrageous.
“We have a group of Conservatives who have walked out of Administration and a Conservative Convener who thinks it is acceptable to prevent an alternative Administration being proposed.
“The Convener is now acting way beyond the realms of democracy and reason by refusing this to be even discussed in the Council.
“It is not too late for him to back down and allow this motion to be debated but if he does not then he should resign from office for the good of Moray.
“The SNP has negotiated in good faith and we made it clear that if a Partnership could not be formed then we would put forward a proposal to form a minority administration.
“No alternative is being offered by the six remaining Administration councillors, including the Tory Convener but he is not willing to accept anything else.
“This is ludicrous.”
SNP Co-Leader Graham Leadbitter said:
“There is no reason whatsoever for the Convener to refuse this motion other than a desperate attempt to cling to power.
“His own party has deserted him but he is unwilling to see anyone else take on the Council Administration.
“Being part of Moray Council’s Administration is a serious responsibility and a privilege for those who take it on. It is now being taken for granted and the people of Moray are being taken for a ride.
“The Tory Convener has now acted in an undemocratic and unjustifiable manner and unless he reconsiders and allows this critically important motion to be debated then he has to go.
“The SNP will use every means at our disposal to get the Council back on track in spite of the continuing efforts of Tory Councillors to drag the Council down.”
