Finnie Slams Shambolic Moray Leadership
John Finnie MSP (pictured) has slammed the leadership at Moray Council for pouring council tax payers cash down the drain after a freedom of information response revealed that the shambolic council lost £215,702 in a deal with developer Springfield Properties.
Earlier this month it was revealed that Moray Council would be forced to pay back a developer contribution of £168,000 plus interest following a 15-year timescale for works to link the A96 and Elgin's Edgar Road retail park lapsing.
The FOI response received by Mr Finnie reveals that Moray will be forced to give Springfield Property £47,702 of interest, on top of the original £168,000.
Commenting, John Finnie said:
“This deal is the latest example of the shambolic leadership at Moray Council once more letting its citizens down.
“I am calling on Audit Scotland to look into this matter which will result in the Council not only repaying the original £168,000, but also around £50,000 in interest payments.
“Local Greens have been critical of the link road project for a long time, with the original deal focussing only on the rise of the motor car and ignoring the need to reduce road traffic and improve active travel links.
“One would like to think that in considering future transport improvement the council would give due consideration to those who wish to walk, cycle or travel by public transport.
“Local government finances are under severe pressure and reports earlier in the year suggested Moray Council was close to bankruptcy.
“They don’t have £50,000 to pour down the drain and folk will rightly be angered at this complete, unnecessary waste.
“The Council now finds itself without political leadership following the decision by the failing Tories to jump ship earlier in the week.
“Quite frankly the people of Moray deserve better than they are getting from their council and it is time for elected member’s and senior officials to get their act together and sort things out.”
