Highly Skilled Staff Blocked From The UK By Self Defeating Home Office
The UK Government’s immigration policies are “self-defeating”, the CBI’s UK policy director has warned, following revelations that highly skilled STEM staff are being blocked from entering the country after securing jobs.
The BBC revealed that over 1,600 IT specialists and engineers who had secured jobs in the UK were denied visas between December and March.
Industry experts have warned that the monthly limits on the number of entrants allowed under Theresa May’s Tier 2 visa system is threatening the economy – turning away skilled workers from outside the European Union who would play a vital role helping develop a high-tech economy.
Dr Julia Wilson, associate director of the Wellcome Sanger Institute, told the BBC that “important research" had been delayed over the past months due to the immigration system, which she dubbed “not fit for purpose."
Gillian Martin MSP (pictured) said:
“Theresa May’s legacy at the Home Office one of a failed immigration system that is failing our economy and everyone in it.
“Rather than mitigating the effects of a devastating ‘Brexodus’ of valued and skilled EU workers, the Tory Government is instead targeting and rejecting the very IT and engineering professionals from the rest of the world that we need so desperately.
“Scotland is even more dependent on immigration than the rest of the UK for our future prosperity and success.
“That is why – between cases like this and the Windrush scandal – the case for full devolution of immigration powers to Scotland is stronger than ever."
