The Tories Are Treating Holyrood With Contempt
David Davis (pictured) has yet again refused to give evidence to Holyrood's Europe Committee.
The SNP has accused the Tory government of treating the Scottish Parliament with contempt – after Brexit secretary David Davis refused for the sixth time to give evidence to Holyrood’s Europe Committee.
The Committee had invited David Davis to come before it and to give Scotland’s Parliament the chance to scrutinise the UK government’s Brexit plans and the impact that this will have on Scotland – yet David Davis continues to ignore these invites and offer junior ministers on his behalf rather than effectively engaging with the Scottish Parliament himself.
SNP MSP and Europe Committee Convener Joan McAlpine previously wrote to David Davis asking him to appear in front of her committee in July 2016, December 2016, January 2017, September 2017 and December 2017 before this latest request last month.
Scottish Secretary David Mundell has previously assured Ms McAlpine that David Davis would appear before Holyrood.
The UK government continues to refuse to release the Brexit impact papers to Holyrood’s Europe Committee, despite making these available to committees at Westminster.
This follows the UK government’s initial attempt to hide the papers away from MSPs at the Scotland Office – before a screeching U-turn following strong SNP pressure.
Commenting, SNP MSP Joan McAlpine, who convenes the Europe Committee, said:
“Yet again, the Tories are treating Scotland’s Parliament with complete and utter contempt – they arrogantly think they can do whatever they want and get away with it.
“Not only is David Davis refusing to come before us and answer our questions on Brexit, for the sixth time – the UK government still won’t release its Brexit impact assessment, leaving Holyrood in the dark on the biggest issue facing Scotland.
“The fact that David Davis couldn’t be bothered to reply to our Committee’s letter himself says it all.
“This is symptomatic of the Tories’ approach to Brexit and their attitude towards this Parliament – they treat us as an afterthought, while conspiring to take powers away from Holyrood.
“It’s not acceptable, when we know just how seriously Brexit will damage jobs and our economy.
“It’s just the latest example of just how little the Tories care about Scotland’s interests.”
