A Record 11,000 Activities for Holocaust Memorial Day 2018

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Tuesday March 6 2018

11,000 activities took place across the UK to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) this year - more than ever before.

Organisations including libraries, schools and workplaces held HMD activities to remember people murdered in, and all those affected by, the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Choir performances, evening prayers, Brownie group meetings, textile exhibitions, films, civic ceremonies and film screenings were just some of the events organised.

This year the theme was the power of words and thousands of people considered how language has been used in the past, and is still used today, both for good and evil.

HMDT organised the National Commemorative Ceremony for HMD 2018, which was attended by 800 guests including survivors of the Holocaust and genocide, and faith, civic and political leaders.

45,000 postcards were sent by HMDT to schools, universities and community groups across the UK, enabling thousands of people read and respond to the stories of Renie Inow, a Kindertransportee and Sedin Mustafić, a survivor of the Genocide in Bosnia.

On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, HMD 2018 was marked by tens of thousands of people and through partnership with Twitter a special purple flame emoji was produced, helping #HMD2018 to trend top on the platform on the day.
