Brownies pack a lot of learning into science session

A group of Highland Brownies celebrated Women in Science Day by taking part in a digital skills session organised by Skills Development Scotland’s (SDS) My World of Work Live! team.

The 1st Inshes Brownies were learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and programmed games consoles to display animations in an introduction to coding.

SDS’s events and facilities co-ordinator Kirsty Brook organised the event, which took place in Inshes Primary, Inverness. Kirsty’s mum Moyra is the pack’s Brown Owl.

Moyra said:

“This will go towards their Brownie science badge.

“I was surprised and delighted at how quickly the girls took to coding.

“It’s clear that girls will play an essential role in this industry in the future.”

Daughter Kirsty has introduced hundreds of school pupils to technology and Scotland’s careers website www.myworldofwork.co.uk at SDS’s digital studio, in Church Street, Inverness.

She revealed that Scotland’s digital technology is growing every day and is predicted to create up to 12,800 jobs for the next four years running.

Kirsty said:

“Digital skills are going to be very important for individuals and employers and I hope introducing them in this fun way will encourage the girls to consider technology as one of their career options in the future.”

The Brownies were also visited by engineers from local employer Lifescan, including STEM Inspiration Apprentice of the Year 2016 winner Eilidh Peat.

My World of Work Live! is a set of interactive exhibits and activities designed to inspire young people’s interest in careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Every free, fun My World of Work Live! experience is about hands-on learning – building, making, designing – and makes the best use of the latest technology to engage and inspire.
