Kate Forbes MSP Welcomes Scottish Government Pledge to Ban Plastic Straws
The MSP (pictured with Jenny Henderson) spearheading Scotland's Final Straw campaign - seeking to ban plastic straws - has welcomed a Scottish Government pledge to take action on the issue.
Cabinet Secretary for the Environment Roseanna Cunningham has confirmed the Government’s intention, which has been hailed by Kate Forbes MSP.
The MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, who also sits on Holyrood’s Environment Committee, has now called on the UK Government to step up to the mark and ensure a UK-wide ban.
Kate Forbes MSP said:
“I launched my Final Straw campaign at the beginning of January calling on the UK and Scottish Governments to ban plastic straws.
“Since then there has been an incredible wave of public support.
“A lot of public bodies and private companies have voluntarily ditched plastic straws in the last months which is welcome but to make the big difference there has to be a blanket approach.
“Last week I announced I’d be shifting my focus to the supermarkets and so far Waitrose, Lidl and Asda have all said they have plans to ditch plastic straws or have already done so.
“The Scottish Government has done a lot in recent years to crack down on plastic waste from the charge on carrier bags, to the ban of plastic cotton buds a few weeks ago.
“Banning plastic straws is the obvious next step.
“I am relieved however that no major changes will be implemented without the input of the new disability advisor who will be appointed to the Scottish Government’s expert panel on single use plastics.
“Plastic straws are used widely by those with disabilities and it’s vital that hygienic, accessible and cheap alternatives are in place before plastic straws are all together phased out.
“I still believe that the most effective ban has got to include the UK Government because the litter washed up on our beaches comes from right across the UK.
“The UK Government have been slow to follow the Scottish Government’s lead but perhaps they’ll step out of character for once on plastic straws.”
