EU Doctors Preparing to Leave The UK Due to Brexit Uncertainty

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Tuesday November 14 2017

The MBA has warned that EU Doctors are preparing to leave the UK and are calling for guarantees for EU Medics.

Almost half of European born doctors are considering leaving the UK due to Brexit, a British Medical Association survey has found.

45% of the EU doctors surveyed by the BMA were considering leaving the UK, while 19% had already made plans to go.

Doctors resident in Scotland were less likely to plan to leave according to the survey, with 34% considering leaving and 14% having already made plans to leave.

The BMA has repeatedly warned of the potential damage to the NHS if the Tory government refuses to negotiate protection for EU medics’ jobs and rights after Brexit.

Commenting, Clare Haughey MSP said:

“This survey is just the latest Brexit bad news for our public services.

“While the Scottish Government does everything it can to make Scotland an attractive place to live and work, the reckless Tory Brexit risks seeing vital medical staff pack their bags and leave.

“It is encouraging that EU doctors in Scotland seem less likely to want to leave, and the SNP is unambiguously clear that we want them to stay, unlike Theresa May who appallingly said that foreign doctors should only stay in the UK for an ‘interim period’.

“This BMA survey is yet further confirmation that Scotland needs a differentiated immigration solution, because we simply cannot afford to let the Tories continue to gamble with the futures of the many, valued NHS staff that come to work in Scotland from elsewhere in the EU.”
