Skye MSP to Attend Public Petition Hearing on Healthcare Redesign

Kate Forbes MSP will be attending Thursday’s (9 November) session of the Public Petitions Committee, as it considers a campaign from SOS Skye that calls for an independent scrutiny panel to examine NHS Highland’s major service change proposals in Skye and Lochalsh.

Since being lodged at the Scottish Parliament in 2015, the petition has been discussed six times by the cross-party committee.

According to official papers for the meeting, the committee will have the choice of closing the petition – meaning the matter goes no further at Holyrood – or “to take any other action the Committee considers appropriate”.

Kate Forbes MSP said:

“I will be attending the petitions committee once again this week as they consider the petition on the redesign of healthcare on Skye.

“This is a cross-party committee, with representatives from most of the political parties, and it is separate from the Scottish Government.

“Whilst I am not a member of the committee, I will take the opportunity as the MSP for Skye to highlight the issues that constituents have raised with me repeatedly over the past months.”

The Skye MSP recently praised the progress Portree Hospital campaigners have made after it was announced last month that healthcare provision in the north of the island will be reviewed externally.

NHS Highland has faced significant criticism for failing to deliver reliable out-of-hours emergency care from Portree, and Kate Forbes MSP said the development of an “external view” was testament to locals making their voices heard loud and clear.

Ms Forbes also joined well over 300 residents, and other elected representatives, at a demonstration in Portree at the end of October.
