Prime Minister Pressed on Deportation of American Couple

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Wednesday October 25 2017

Ian Blackford MP has asked to meet with the Prime Minister to discuss the immigration case of the Felbers – an American couple who live in Scotland have will be deported due to a retrospective change in Home Office rules.

The SNP Westminster Leader said the couple moved to Scotland and invested £400,000 to run an award-winning guesthouse in Inverness; they have contributed to the local community as well as the local economy, yet are being forced to leave.

SNP MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, Drew Hendry, has written to Home Secretary Amber Rudd to demand an urgent meeting to urge that "compassion and common sense" is shown in the case of Inverness husband and wife, Russell and Ellen Felber.

The popular couple have been supported by over 1700 local people, including their neighbours, business owners and clergy, amongst many others.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“The Felbers have done nothing wrong.

“They have, at all times sought to comply with the rules, but the UK government changed the rules, during their qualification period, without notice.

“I have asked to meet with the Prime Minister to discuss this case, and the systemic problems with UK immigration policy which means people who contribute to our economy and communities are being forced to leave.

“This has been an incredibly stressful and heart-breaking situation for the couple.

"It is unacceptable that the Felbers, like the Zielsdorff family, who ran the local shop in the tiny village of Laggan before them, are to be ripped from the Highlands.

“The Tories disgraceful “one size fits all” policy doesn’t fit Scotland and has no bearing on the realities of everyday life in rural areas.

“The SNP has long campaigned against damaging Tory immigration policy, and we will continue to make the case that immigration policy should be devolved to the Scottish Government.”
