Fracking Ban Backed at SNP Conference
SNP conference has given its backing to the fracking ban announced by the Scottish Government last week, after passing, overwhelmingly, a topical resolution on the issue.
Scottish Energy Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, announced last week that the process would be banned in Scotland, after 99% of respondents to a Scottish Government consultation opposed allowing fracking to take place.
The move has been welcomed by organisations across the country.
Commenting, Paul Wheelhouse, who moved the topical resolution, said:
"I was proud to announce to the Scottish Parliament last week that 'fracking' will be banned in Scotland.
"It's a move which shows we're serious about protecting Scottish communities and meeting our climate change targets and creating a better, greener country for our future.
"The response to the four-month long consultation showed that it is not only the SNP that is opposed to fracking but 99% of respondents to the Scottish Government's consultation.
"The strength of feeling against fracking in Scotland is clear from the fact that the consultation not only had the second most responses of any Scottish Government consultation, but that views were so strongly against fracking occurring in some of Scotland's most densely populated areas.
“This is an issue that really matters to people and their communities.
“Our evidence-based approach led us to this decision - and this is integral in our efforts to put the interests of Scotland's communities at the heart of everything we do."
