EU Withdrawal Bill Take Devo Backwards Say Greens

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Tuesday September 12 2017

The Tories are attempting to “take devolution backwards” with the EU Withdrawal Bill say the Scottish Greens after the party outlined its intention to vote against the bill in its current form.

Speaking after a statement by Scotland’s Brexit minister, Ross Greer, the Scottish Greens’ external affairs spokesperson, says the EU Withdrawal Bill is “dangerous and undemocratic” and that the Scottish Government should hold itself to a higher standard by committing to democratic and collectively agreed restrictions on the temporary 'Henry VIII' powers that it will receive.

West of Scotland MSP, Ross Greer said:

"The EU Withdrawal Bill is a power grab by a Conservative government hostile to Scotland and to our parliament.

“Twenty years ago, almost to the day, that same Conservative party stood against the overwhelming majority of the Scottish people when they opposed re-establishment of a Scottish Parliament.

“Now they are attempting to take devolution backwards, using a Brexit vote, which Scotland of course rejected, as their excuse.

"Their bill is dangerous and undemocratic, giving UK government ministers powers invented for and by a 16th century tyrant king.

“They would gain the ability to go as far as removing the rights of citizens resident in this country without so much as a vote in parliament.

“The Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government should hold to a higher standard.

"If this bill is not amended at Westminster, the Scottish Government must ensure that the similar powers it will gain are used in a transparent and accountable manner with the collective agreement of the Scottish Parliament.

“The democratic tradition in this country is both deep and vibrant, we should not allow a Westminster government to undermine that but nor should any Scottish Government take advantage of the situation we find ourselves in."
