Are We Being Robbed?

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Friday September 8 2017

Tory government guilty of daylight democratic robbery over key committee seats.

The SNP has warned the Tory government will be guilty of “daylight democratic robbery” if they storm ahead with plans to occupy a majority of seats on key committees in parliament which will play a crucial role in scrutinising the UK government’s Brexit plans.

Pete Wishart MP, the SNP’s Shadow Leader of the House, raised the threat during Business Questions yesterday in Westminster, stating that in a parliament of minorities the UK government “has no reason or right to expect to have a majority of seats on these committees.”

The warning follows on from concerns raised by the SNP’s Europe spokesperson, Peter Grant MP, who criticised the UK government’s EU Withdrawal Bill which seeks to not just take control back from Brussels, but also from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in a "Westminster power grab".

The SNP has also warned that Theresa May’s government is guilty of seeking every opportunity to defy scrutiny in order to push through its hard Brexit plans – despite serious concerns raised from the devolved administrations, businesses and industry figures across the UK.

Pete Wishart MP, the SNP’s Shadow Leader of the House, commented:

“The Tory government is guilty of daylight democratic robbery as it seeks to defy the result of the general election.

“Theresa May returned from her strong and stable election mantra with a weak and wobbly government without a majority.

“Despite this, the Prime Minister is intent on pursuing one of the most outrageous parliamentary stitch-ups in recent memory.

“The Tory government's Brexit brigade trumpeted about taking back control from Brussels, however that very same mantra has now turned to parliament where the UK government are now actively attempting to eliminate any opposition – first through an unnecessary general election and now through creating a false majority in parliament on key committees.

“The UK government has no reason or right to expect to have a majority on these committees.

“They do not command a majority – they threw that away in a needless general election.

“This is a parliament of minorities and that reality must be reflected in the arithmetic of the Standing Committees."
