Artist Sarah Longley Exhibits New Garden Collection on Balmacara Estate

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Wednesday August 2 2017

Sarah Longley’s beautiful landscapes will be on display at The Steadings Gallery on the National Trust for Scotland’s Balmacara Estate from August 2-11, 2017.

Acclaimed local artist Sarah Longley will display her latest body of work at The Steadings Gallery on the National Trust for Scotland’s Balmacara Estate this August.

Following exhibitions in Dublin’s Peppercanister Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, Sarah’s new ‘Garden Landscapes’ exhibition takes inspiration from her own semi-wild Highland garden, as well as those in the community around her.

Sarah, who was born in Belfast and now lives in the West Highlands, says:

“My recent work has been inspired by my new home in the West Highlands and I've been particularly drawn to the salt-marsh close to our home and the hill behind (Angel Hill) which provides an excellent promontory for sketching.

"I became interested in the idea of gardens within the landscape, beneath brooding Northern skies.

“This interest extended to my neighbours’ gardens; personal, intimate havens with the wildness beyond nipping at the fringes.

"In this exhibition, I want to celebrate gardens, their place in nature and our human presence there: the beauty to be found in both order and chaos.”
