Sharleen Spiteri (pictured) and Texas will join forces with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for an unmissable BBC Music Day show in Glasgow.
As a preview to this year’s BBC Music Day, Scottish superstars Texas will join forces with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for a unique gig at Glasgow’s legendary Barrowland music venue.
This unmissable collaboration will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Two and BBC Radio Scotland on Friday 9 June, with highlights on BBC Two Scotland on Friday 16 June.
BBC Music Day, the UK-wide annual celebration of music, takes place on Thursday 15 June and, this year, celebrates the power of music – bringing people together, enhancing feelings of wellbeing and creating unforgettable moments.
As well as Texas and the BBC SSO gig on Friday 9 June, music highlights for this year’s BBC Music Day includes performances from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Will Young and the Courteeners and Alfie Boe, amongst many other music highlights across the UK.
Texas & the BBC SSO show will be hosted on the night by BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway.
As a preview of this live show, Billy Sloan will present a special show on BBC Radio Scotland between 6.30-8.00pm highlighting some of the best live gigs.
Tickets to the concert are free and the public can apply through a ballot on BBC Shows and Tickets website from Monday 22 May - www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours
Sharleen Spiteri of Texas is looking forward to the Scottish gig and taking the stage alongside the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
“It's always a magical moment to play with an orchestra, even more so in your home town.”
Following on from the huge success of last year’s Travis and the BBC SSO collaboration, Sharon Mair, BBC Scotland’s Editor, Radio Music and Events, is delighted to see Scotland host another must-see music partnership:
“I am thrilled we are able to bring this event back to the iconic Barrowland Ballroom with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and this year with international superstars Texas for BBC Music Day.”
After the Texas gig, Scotland will join in the BBC Music Day celebrations on Thursday 15 June with a specially themed ‘Get It On’ programme on BBC Radio Scotland, hosted by Bryan Burnett (6.30-9.00pm).
This will be followed by ‘The Quay Sessions’ live (9.00-11.00pm) presented by Roddy Hart , including a performance from Lau.
The show will also showcase Scottish music with the shortlist for the SAY Awards (Scottish Album of the Year Awards).
There will also be another chance for fans to hear Texas and the BBC SSO at the Barrowlands gig.
Bob Shennan, Director of BBC Radio:
“BBC Music Day is a chance for people across the country to celebrate the power of music in all its glorious forms, from participating in one of their local events to tuning in at home for some fantastic performances.
“There is a diverse array of activities on offer with something for everyone to help mark the contribution that music makes to our lives.”
Information about events and how to participate is available on the BBC Music Day website www.bbc.co.uk/musicday
